If you’ve been following the MLB playoffs you’ve been watching some great baseball, but a monumental decision for tonight’s game 5 reads like daytime television.
New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi has decided to bench Alex Rodriguez for poor performance after game 4. Rodriguez is 2 for 16 with nine strikeouts in the series, and has looked horrible in those moments when the team needed their $29 million third baseman to step it up.
According to USA Today, Eric Chavez will start at third tonight, and bat ninth, with Robinson Cano in Rodriguez’s typical third spot. Ibanez gets the start at designated hitter with Derek Jeter able to return to shortstop after a foot injury.
This decision isn’t anything new to A-Rod when his performance is in the toilet. Back in 2006 former manager Joe Torre dropped Rodriguez to eighth in Game 4 of the 2006 Division Series against the Detroit Tigers.
Understand that your job as a professional athlete is to produce not entertain. Is A-Rod nearing the end of his career? I wonder, but from the looks of it the Yankees aren’t going to lose any more games while he tries to figure it out.
