Here we go. On the heels of the current rape allegations against former NFL safety Darren Sharper, you would think current athletes would be more careful about their behavior.
The Miami police are now investigating San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, Ricardo Lockette, a Seattle Seahawks wide receiver, and Quinton Patton, a 49ers receiver, as “persons involved” in an alleged sexual assault. Miami Police Department information officer Rene Pimentel clarified that no charges have been filed, but there is an investigation. According to USA Today Sports:
Miami Police Department public information officer Rene Pimentel told USA TODAY Sports earlier Thursday the investigation was for sexual assault but made a clarification saying the investigation being conducted by the Special Victims Unit is for a suspicious incident.
See, it doesn’t matter that charges haven’t been filed, what matters is that there’s an investigation at all. In the minds of the public, something bad, even on a small scale, has already happened. Let’s take a look at the alleged scene: three football players, a woman, alcohol and drugs. You can almost predict the bad ending.
Colin Kaepernick is one of the most watched and popular NFL quarterbacks and players in the league. His status rose two years ago and now he’s everywhere: on magazine covers, spreads in magazines and in commercials. His notoriety has been that of an achiever, and to have that stained with the mere allegation of this type of wrong-doing is just sad. For the other two players who are the lesser-known of the three, congratulations, the world now know you. This is not how you want to be introduced.
But it’s not just on the players. The women in these scenarios should also make better choices. I don’t care if you feel “comfortable”, engaging in drugs and alcohol puts you at risk. You have to ask yourself, it is worth the risk?
What more can be said here? Of course, everybody is waiting for the facts to come out. While Pimentel gave no confirmation that a rape kit was performed, I’m sure one was completed. On the heels of the rape charges against Darren Sharper, this is just not a good look.
When will these guys learn?
