At 2pm today, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver will address the NBA and the public with more information regarding the punishment for L.A. Clippers owner Donald Sterling. The investigation into the alleged conversation between Donald Sterling and his mistress V. Stiviano where he makes racists comments about African-Americans has caused public outrage and a demand for swift action by the NBA. It’s unlikely the NBA can make Sterling sell his team, so if the punishment is a fine and suspension, what are the players prepared to do?
The Clippers’ players have a huge decision to make. If Sterling stays on as the owner, are they prepared to continue on with a team where the owner feels this way about them? How will they respond to his return to the games (once his pending suspension is over)?
Their decision won’t be easy. While many say it’s hard to walk away from your “dream” I would counter that saying I’m sure their dream didn’t include working for a racist owner. Besides, their response will set the tone for the NBA for the rest of this season and for years to come. If Sterling stays on as the owner, then all eyes will be on what happens at the end of the NBA season. Will Doc Rivers stay on as coach? Will players leave the team?
After the punishment is issued, there’s still so much more to consider. The aftermath and the residue of this will stain the NBA for the rest of this season, at least.
The question still remains, what will the players do?
