Brittney Griner taking her talents to the WNBA with Phoenix Mercury
Jersey Girl Sports fans, it’s official! Basketball phenom Brittney Griner will be taking her talents to the WNBA with the Phoenix Mercury. The 6’8″ dynamo was the first-round draft pick in the WNBA draft yesterday. Her level of play during her collegiate years with Baylor University increased viewership and interest and she hopes to continue the trend in the WNBA:
“I definitely want to bring it every time I step on the court,” Griner said to Forbes.com. “Anything and everything I can do to help the league and bring more excitement and followers to the game, I will go out there and do it.”
Griner is the first NCAA basketball player ever to score 2,000 points and block 500 shots. She gained national attention since of days of dunking the ball while in high school.
She’s joined by second and third picks Elena Delle Donne and Skylar Diggins who will play for the Chicago Sky and Tulsa Shock, respectively.
The 2013 WNBA season begins May 27 on ESPN2 with a double header featuring Washington vs. Tulsa and Chicago vs. Phoenix.
