It’s countdown to the Super Bowl and football fans are preparing for the big day.
One fan in particular has her eye set on the February 3rd date when she will be cheering for the San Francisco 49ers. Colin Kaepernick’s birth mother…Heidi Russo.
Russo gave Kaepernick up for adoption when she was 19 years old. She recently shared her story with Fox31 Denver.
“I knew I couldn’t have provided my son the kind of life he deserved when I became pregnant,” she said. “I had him for about six weeks before putting him up for adoption, and what a blessing it was to have Rick and Teresa Kaepernick be able to step up and raise Colin.”
Russo says that she has kept in touch with Rick and Teresa Kaepernick over the years and has corresponded with Colin a few times online.
I like all the pre-game shows leading up to a big game; a few weeks ago I was watching a special profile on Colin Kaepernick. Kaepernick revealed how much his family meant to him and that their undying love and support for him helped make him into the man he is today.
He also shared a story about his close bond with Rick Kaepernick. When Kapernick found out he was going to be the starting quarterback for the 49ers, the first person he told was his dad, “I knew he was going to be just as excited as I was and probably not sleep all night, but I couldn’t not tell him.” Sure enough, according to Teresa Kaepernick, Rick stayed up all night pacing with nerves, excitement and pride. Colin Kaepernick laughed as he recalled his dad’s love and said, “They are truly my family, the only difference is that I am a few shades darker.”
Russo has said she is not trying to cash in on Kaepernick’s success and is in no way trying to replace his parents; she just wants him to know that she never stopped thinking about him and would like to meet him in person on his terms. Russo, a registered nurse, currently lives in Aurora with two sons.
Giving him up for adoption had to be an extremely hard decision but it shows that Heidi Russo was thinking about her son first when she gave him to a family that could give him a better life and in making that choice she gave him the greatest gift of all…love. It remains to be seen whether or not Kaepernick wants to meet her in person, he is very devoted to his family. Adoption is always an extremely personal decision for all parties involved.
“For my family, we will just be cheering for Colin just as loud as the Kaepernicks will be, come Super Bowl.” said Russo
For a young man who is living out his dreams on the biggest stage in football he deserves all the cheering, support and encouragement that come his way. Regardless of the outcome of Super Bowl XLVII, Colin has already received a happy ending… he has Rick and Teresa Kaepernick as his parents.
