Dolphins Suspended Player Asked To “Toughen Up” Teammate By Coaches
The story of NFL bullying in the locker room of the Miami Dolphins continues to grow legs as each day continues.
According to the South Florida Sun Sentinel, it’s being reported that the Dolphins coaching staff asked suspended lineman Richie Incognito to “toughen up” teammate Johnathan Martin after Martin missed part of the team’s offseason workout. The sources told the Sun Sentinel that they believed that Incognito went too far with the instructions given to him by members of the coaching staff. It is not clear whether the instructions came from head coach Joe Philbin, offensive line coach Jim Turner, or other assistants.
Incognito was suspended from the Dolphins team late Sunday for misconduct related to the alleged harassment of Martin.
While Incognito has a history of raciest tirades, this voicemail that he left for Martin could be the nail in his coffin, when Incognito called Martin, who is biracial, a “half-n*****”, threatened his family and tells Martin “I’ll kill you.”
Local television cameras caught up with Incognito on Tuesday, who spoke out for the first time on the incident saying, “just trying to weather the storm right now. This will pass.”
I don’t know about passing, Incognito’s contract is up with the Dolphins at the end of the season, and I doubt that he will be brought back, but does that mean he’s played his last game in the NFL?
We’ll keep you posted as this story continues to unfold. I’m interested to hear from Johnathan Martin, or is waiting to tell his story to Oprah on the effects of bullying in the NFL.
