The tragedy surrounding the death of Tryavon Martin followed by the acquittal of his accused murderer George Zimmerman is still a hot topic in communities across America. The senseless death seemed to only deepen the wounds of racism and further challenges us as Americans and as people.
Sports, usually quiet on the political front has been engaged more than ever. In the September issue of Ebony magazine, Miami Heat’s Dwyane Wade is on the cover with is sons Zaire and Zion with a caption underneath which reads:
WE ARE TRAYVON
Ebony magazine’s Editor-in-Chief Amy Barnett said that she was moved by the Trayvon Martin case:
“As a mother of a young Black boy, the tragedy of Travyon Martin affected me deeply,” said Barnett in a press release. “We simply cannot allow the conversations on this issue to come to a standstill. As the leading source for an authoritative perspective on the African-American community, at Ebony we are committed to serving as a hub for Black America to explore solutions, and to giving readers the information and tools they need to help ensure a bright future for all of our children.”
I think the conversations surrounding this care are necessary and regardless of where you stand on the issue, I think these types of cover stories help us all to stay reminded that while we have come a long way, we still have a long way to go.
I applaud Dwyane Wade for his public stance on this issue.
