Emmitt Smith offers words of wisdom regarding Johnny Manziel’s lifestyle that apply to all rookies

Johnny Manziel is young, rich and famous. Add to that the fact that he’s a professional athlete and the combination is almost lethal –to his career that is. At least that’s what NFL Hall-of-Famer Emmitt Smith thinks. In an interview with 105.The Fan, Smith talked about the choices Manziel is making off the field.

“That lifestyle is going to be a short lifestyle — a short career lifestyle — if he continues that,” Smith said during an interview with 105.3 The Fan. “As we used to say, you can’t keep burning the candle at both ends of the stick. The candle gets small fairly quick. Johnny is going to have to figure it out.

“Hopefully he’s not doing anything to hurt himself outside of drinking — which is going to harm his body and harm his performance anyway. At the end of the day, he’s going to have to learn to manage those things.”

Manziel recently stated that he doesn’t care what people say about his lifestyle. He concluded that he was going to live his life to the fullest and still stay committed to the game. Smith, understands this line of thinking. It falls in line with Manziel’s age.

“First, let’s recognize — Johnny is young. I was young and dumb myself at one point in time,” Smith said. “But maturity itself, and maturing as a professional athlete, is something that is required of every pro football player. I think right now Johnny Manziel is going to get a glimpse of what negative press can do for you. A lot of people think negative press is good press — or any press is good press. It’s not.”

Amen to that! Rookies are very young and they have access to much more at the professional level. The trappings that come with youth are at their fingertips and it can be easy to feel invincible and indestructible. It is usually this feeling that leads to poor choices due to a lack of understanding of how those choices affect perception, and perception is reality.

But pride always comes before the fall.

The real test will be what Manziel does on the field. If he isn’t winning, people will want him to stay out of the strip clubs and night clubs and focus on the game. If he’s winning no one will care.
