Well, we knew the Patriots were going to respond; we just didn’t know it would be this fast! According to Deadspin, the New England Patriots have released Aaron Hernandez. This comes just after his arrest earlier this morning as a part of the investigation into the murder of acquaintance Odin Lloyd.
The Patriots released a statement:
“A young man was murdered last week and we extend our sympathies to the family and friends who mourn his loss. Words cannot express the disappointment we feel knowing that one of our players was arrested as a result of this investigation. We realize that law enforcement investigations into this matter are ongoing. We support their efforts and respect the process. At this time, we believe this transaction is simply the right thing to do.”
Hernandez still has a five-year, $40 million extension, with $16 million guaranteed. Rumor has it that much of the $16 has already been received and that his contract didn’t include a “non-performance” clause so regardless of what happens, the Patriots may be on the hook for the rest of the money.
The timing of this is interesting as NFL rookies get ready for their first season in the NFL. I hope they are watching this story unfold and learn this lesson the easy way.
You can learn by living or by listening. It’s better do to the latter.
