Italian police raid Jamaican sprinters’ hotel rooms

ROME (AP) ~ Italian police raided the hotel room of Jamaican sprinters Asafa Powell and Sherone Simpson after they tested positive for banned substances. According to the AP via Undine police captain Antonio Pisapia, the rooms of the athletes and physical trainer Christopher Xuereb of Canada were searched and drugs and supplements were seized.

“We are examining the substances now,” Pisapia said. “No arrests have been made and nobody has been placed under investigation.”

The raid took place on Friday at the Fra i Pini hotel in the northeastern city of Lignano Sabbiadoro.

Powell is a Olympic winning sprinter and former world-record holder at 100 meters. He and Simpson tested positive for the stimulant oxilofrine at the Jamaican championships last month and were informed of the test results on Saturday.

What’s crazy is that this happened the same day that American 100-meter record holder Tyson Gay revealed that he also failed a doping test.

What’s really going on? While the use of PED’s in the Olympics is not new, it’s always a bit surprising. Money isn’t necessarily the draw, the the level of competition is even more fierce. It’s still disappointing. We love these athletes and always hope that their success really is do to hard work and dedication.

Anything less leaves a scar that seems to never go away.
