Jay-Z and his Roc Nation Sports agency is steadily building credibility by loading up its client roster with big names in sports. They have New York Yankees Robinson Cano, New York Giants Victor Cruz, WNBA star Skylar Diggins and now they’re looking to add New York Jets rookie quarterback Geno Smith.
According to ProFootballTalk.com (PFT) an agent who works for Roc Nation has been in talks with Smith who terminated his relationship with his former agency, Select Sports Group after he wasn’t selected in the first round of the 2013 NFL draft.
Jay-Z is not a certified agent with the NFLPA, therefore he cannot make a formal pitch or serve as a “runner” for a certified agent. While they have teamed up with CAA Sports, it’s said that CAA has no involvement in this courtship of Smith. According to documents obtained by “Shutdown Corner”, Geno Smith will receive a maximum signing bonus of $2,030,620 and a base salary of $405,000 in 2013. I’m sure he’s looking for opportunities to make money outside of the game, i.e.endorsements.
With all the drama surrounding the quarterback situation at the Jets camp, Geno Smith has already been pushed into the spotlight. Hopefully teaming up with a good agency will help him capitalize off the hype. The good news is that Smith has options. Lagardere Sports, Priority Sports, Relativity Sports and Blueprint Sports Group are also recruiting Smith.
Geno Smith may have been upset by not being drafted in the first round, but it could be a blessing in disguise.
All the balls are in his court.
