The ESPY’s is the Oscars of the sports world and this year the ESPY’s celebrated 20 years of honoring the best in sports. Every year they add more elements to the event to make it more entertaining and fun. This year, which was better than last year’s event, (in my opinion) had actor Jon Hamm hosting. He started with an eight minute monologue that took aim at many athletes including Ray Allen and Dwight Howard. The initial mention of Howard’s name brought boos from the crowd, but the joke following sent the crowd into a roar!!

Watch the video: (joke comes in around 1:30)

I thought Hamm did a great job and later comedic sets included shots at the NY Jets, the NFL replacement refs and the lighting debacle at the Super Bowl.

The best part of the night was the tribute to the Hoyt family and the beautiful Arthur Ashe award and speech by Robin Roberts. They were truly inspirational and left not one dry eye in the room.

I hope that the ESPY’s does more to bring better entertainment and music to the event. I always enjoy watching it, and I think if they’re going to mimic the Oscars, they have to step their game up.
