The tragedy surrounding Jovan Belcher’s murder-suicide with girlfriend Kassandra Perkins left us all asking, “why?”. Well, according to the NY Post, Belcher’s mother is shedding some light into what may have triggered the events of that fateful day.
According to Cheryl Shepard, Jovan Belcher’s mother, Jovan questioned the paternity of his 3-month-old daughter, Zoey. She apparently told investigators that he had doubts about whether he was truly the father of Zoey. According to the Post:
“She said he (believed he) wasn’t necessarily the father of the child.”
Regardless, as it stands, Zoey is considered Belcher’s daughter and she will be taken care of by the NFL. Under the “surviving-child” benefit, Zoey would be entitled to a $600,000 life insurance policy, a $100,000 retirement account and $200,000 for each of the four seasons Belcher played in the NFL.
Zoey’s guardian will receive $108,000 per year over the next four years. When Zoey turns 5, she will receive $48,000 and then $52,000 per year until she is 18 or 23, depending on whether or not she attends college. Belcher’s mother will take care of Zoey and Perkin’s parents will have a significant role in her life.
Even if it turns out that she’s not his daughter, it only lends itself to describing a crime of assion. A split-second action in anger that could have been resolved with a paternity test, not a murder – suicide.
I hope that the impact on Zoey’s life will end with a positive outcome.
