Anytime the starting quarterback is replaced, it will cause a major shakeup. Today, another one gets replaced as Washington Redskins coach Mike Shanahan has decided to replace starting quarterback Robert Griffin, III with Kirk Cousins. Still, it’s not really a surprise.
Rumors of RG3 being “sat down” swirled on Sunday after yet another loss. RG3 says this is about injury saying Shanahan,
“wanted to make sure I got to the offseason free from injury.”
That may have been what he said, but the truth lies in the numbers. The Redskins are 3-10 and Griffin has taken alot of bad hits this season. Given his fatal hit last season, I do believe there may be some small truth in Shanahan wanting to have RG3 healthy in the post season. Still, it’s not like they’re going to the playoffs. For Shanahan this was all about business.
“I think the risk is too great. I don’t want him going to his third year on IR,” he said. “We’re in here to win games, but I’m going to do the right thing.”
According to ESPN:
Shanahan was asked how he communicated the news to Griffin.
“My job is not always to be someone’s friend. My job is to coach them. My job is to get the best out of them. My job is not to be Robert’s friend,” he said.
I agree and with their record there had to be some changes. Cousins is ready to take the lead, understanding his role:
“Robert is the franchise quarterback here. This is his team,” he said. “My job is to help this team get a win.“
Win indeed. While RG3 has been benched, at the end of this season Shanahan may be benched permanently.
“At the end of the year, we’ll get a chance to sit down with each other, see if we’re on the same page,” Shanahan said Wednesday when asked about his relationship with Snyder.
We’ll see what happens. In the meantime, Cousins has a job to do. The good news is that RG3 will be on the sidelines rooting him on.
“I promise y’all I’ll be there for him every step of the way,” he said.
It will be an interesting two weeks for the Redskins.
