Michael Phelps voted AP male athlete of the year
Well this is good news! The Associated Press has voted Michael Phelps as the male athlete of the year for the second time –another award he can add to his very impressive list of accomplishments, and Phelps knows it:
“Obviously, it’s a big accomplishment,” Phelps said. ”There’s so many amazing male athletes all over the world and all over our country. To be able to win this is something that just sort of tops off my career.”
Michael Phelps beat out LeBron James and Usain Bolt for the award getting 40 votes while James received 37 and Bolt 23. Now that he’s retired he can reflect on all he’s done and this award is like icing on the cake for Phelps who won four gold and two silver medals in swimming at the Olympic games in London this past summer and securing his place as winning more gold medals than any Olympian.
Michael Phelps is America’s golden boy–all heart, a great athlete, a fierce competitor with the drive and discipline we all admire–AND he loves his mama!
He’s set for life financially and has turned his attention to golf where he now trains with Hank Haney, the former trainer for Tiger Woods as part of a television series on the Golf Channel.
Even though he’s golfing, could he return to the pool? Hmm, I don’t think so. Phelps agrees:
”Sure, I could come back in another four years. But why? I’ve done everything I wanted to do. There’s no point in coming back.”
Congratulations to Michael Phelps. He may no longer be swimming, but I do believe the best is yet to come.
