The Detroit Tigers have reached an agreement with pitcher Justin Verlander for a $140 million contract extension. This will keep Verlander in Detroit through 2019. The deal includes a $22 million vesting option for a sixth year and starts in 2015. The already owe Verlander $40 million for the next two seasons, so the Tigers will now pay the pitcher $180 million over the next seven seasons.
This makes Verlander the highest paid pitcher in the league over annual value.
Verlander tweeted his excitement about the deal:
I love this city & the fans - couldn't be more excited to spend my career here! We're going to bring a World Series to Detroit!!! 4:45 PM - 29 Mar 13
Hey Justin, with that kind of money coming your way, you better bring more than one World Series to Detroit.
I still don't know where baseball gets its money.
