NBA’s Lamar Odom’s Charity Raises Millions, But Is It a Scam?
In the world of sports it seems like 9 out of 10 athletes have their own charity, and NBA player Lamar Odom and his reality star wife, Khloe Kardashian, are no different.
According to ESPN, Cathy’s Kids was a charity started after Odom’s mother passed away of cancer when he was 12 years old. The purpose of the organization is to provide money for cancer research, but in the eight years of the charity’s existence they have raised $2.2 million, but none have gone to the research.
According the Lamar and Khloe’s joint EBay page, the mission of Cathy’s Kids states…
“Cathy’s Kids was founded by Los Angeles Lakers star Lamar Odom in March 2004. It was developed as a means for Lamar to streamline all his charitable efforts and focus on making a positive impact on the lives of under-privileged children, as well as targeting a disease that has played a significant role in his life, cancer. Lamar lost his mother to stomach cancer and subsequently is committed to help causes that are focused on finding a cure and helping people who suffer from the disease. Lamar is focused on ensuring that funds are available for under-privileged youth that live in the inner cities of New York and Los Angeles. It is important to Lamar that young people, especially between the ages of 9-14, have the resources they need to get all the opportunities available to succeed in life.”
But according to Yahoo, at least 60 percent of the $2.2 million went to finance two elite youth basketball travel teams. What travel youth basketball team needs $1.1 million dollars?
However, on another EBay page that is solely dedicated to the Cathy’s Kids charity, there is NO mention of cancer or cancer research. This site makes the following claims regarding the charity…
“Lamar is focused on ensuring that funds are available for under-privileged youth that live in the inner cities of New York and Los Angeles. The things that Lamar has identified as most important to helping young people today would be to make sure they have access to some or all of the following: educational tools such as books and computers, mentoring and tutoring services and recreational opportunities.”
Presently, the Cathy’s Kids website is inactive, and according to ESPN, the site’s representatives claim it has been shut down for years following continued losses of about $256,000 as of 2011.
While Khloe is Lamar’s wife, according to Yahoo, the reality star is actively auctioning clothes and accessories to benefit the charity and her page clearly states that “all auction items benefit Cathy’s Kids, a Lamar Odom Foundation.”
So what’s the deal?
No one is angry that you are raising money. No one is angry by the two different pages that both rake in money. What people want and need to know is where the money is going. That would only seem fair.
