NY Giants turning the page on Manning; Pick Daniel Jones as starting QB

NY Giants fans have been angrily and sadly watching the decline of famed quarterback Eli Manning for several seasons now. It seemed the front office was going to stay loyal to Eli, despite his lack of performance. Well, now that the Giants are 0-2 seemingly heading into another dismal season, it seems the leadership has had a change of heart. They have benched Manning and Daniel Jones will start.
“Eli and I spoke this morning,” coach Pat Shurmur said in a release by the team. “I told him that we are making a change and going with Daniel as the starter. I also talked to Daniel. Eli was obviously disappointed, as you would expect, but he said he would be what he has always been, a good teammate, and continue to prepare to help this team win games. Daniel understands the challenge at hand, and he will be ready to play on Sunday.”
Let’s be clear, Jones had an impressive pre-season. He completed 85.3% of his passes with two touchdown passes and no interceptions. That may not be uber-impressive for a rookie in a pre-season game, but the Giants and their fans are desperate. Besides, can they do any worse??
Ultimately, this is a move that I felt was best for this team at this time,” Shurmur said. “I have said it since I got here, I am very fond of Eli. His work ethic, his preparation, his football intelligence. All those attributes are as good as I have ever seen in a player. And Eli worked as hard as you could ask of anybody to get ready for this season. This move is more about Daniel moving forward than about Eli.”
Yep. It’s time to move forward.
