We have some good news and we have some bad news Jersey Girl Sports fam! First the bad news. Serena Williams is out of the Australian Open. She lost in her quarterfinal match  3-6, 7-5, 6-4 against 19-year-old American Sloane Stephens. It appeared she also injured her lower back causing her to lose power in her serve. Serena threw her racket at her chair in anger, and I assume, frustration at the outcome of the game.

Here’s the good news: Sloane Stephens is well on her way to being the next big name in tennis! Beating a champion like Serena is no small feat. Playing since the age of  nine Stephens is walking in the footsteps of trailblazers Venus and Serena. While I’m not confident she could beat a healthy Serena, I do think she will become a household name.

Stephens will face defending champion Victoria Azarenka in the semifinals.

We’re sad to see Serena go, but we’re also happy for Sloane.
