Oscar Pistorious has been granted bail pending his trial for the murder of his girlfriend. The magistrate set the bail at 1 million rand ($113,000), with $11,300 in cash up front and proof that the rest is available. The magistrate said Pistorius must hand over his passports and also turn in any other guns that he owns. Pistorius also cannot leave the district of Pretoria, South Africa's capital, without the permission of his probation officer, Nair said, nor can he take drugs or drink alcohol. He cannot return home & will live with his uncle. Pistorious' next court appearance was set for June 4.
There were shouts of joy from Pistorious' supporter who believe in his innocence, especially his uncle, Arnold Pistorious:
''We are relieved at the fact that Oscar got bail today but at the same time we are in mourning for the death of Reeva with her family. As a family, we know Oscar's version of what happened on that tragic night and we know that that is the truth and that will prevail in the coming court case.''
Of course, the Steenkamp family is disappointed. At the end of the day, their daughter, sister, and friend is dead.
Jersey Girl Sports fam, before we draw any conclusions on this case that has gone global (CNN and the BBC show the hearing live), we should hold to the American standard of assuming innocence before proven guilty. We can easily make many assumptions but the truth is we don't know the truth. The one who does is dead and the other person has yet to tell his story.
In the meantime, let's pray for peace for both families.
I'm sure there'll be more to talk about in the coming months.
