Oscar Pistorius to go on trial for murder in early 2014

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ~According to prosecutors, celebrated and famed double amputee Olympian Oscar Pistorius will be charged with pre-meditated murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Monday and will go on trial in early 2014. Pistorius faces a life sentence with a minimum of 25 years in prison if convicted on that charge.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesman Medupe Simasiku told The Associated Press on Friday that the exact date for the trial had not yet been set and would likely be decided on Monday. The charge of pre-meditated murder was decided as a matter for bail and since then prosecutors have been investigating the shooting. They now feel that the Valentine’s Day shooting justifies the charges and Pistorius should answer to them.

Pistorius has pled not guilty in the shooting death claiming that he thought Steenkamp was a intruder in the early morning hours.

Of course neither the prosecutor nor the defense are commenting on the details of the case and the witness list and official evidence papers will be presented on Monday.

I’m still not sure what to think about this case. It’s certainly plausible that Pistorius thought Steenkamp was an intruder, but I still think there’s something missing in the story.

Hopefully the trial will bring out the full truth and justice.

What do you think?
