When Rob Ryan was fired as the Dallas Cowboys’ defensive coordinator, he fired back with a parting shot, “I’ll be out of work for like five minutes.”
It’s a little longer than five minutes, but ESPN is reporting that the St. Louis Rams have hired Ryan as their defensive coordinator.
St. Louis Rams head coach, Jeff Fisher is a defensive minded coach and will be looking to Ryan to build on the great strides the Rams made defensively this past season. Fisher also has a close relationship with the Ryan family, he coached under Buddy Ryan, father of Rob in Philadelphia.
Under Ryan, the Cowboys’ defense was 19th overall, 17th against the run and 21st against the pass on a team whose secondary was plagued with injuries. Expect Ryan to make an immediate impact for the Rams defense who were on the brink of cracking the top ten in the league’s rankings.
Ryan is known for being, loud, flamboyant and emotional, but also for treating assistants and athletes well and inviting input, which speaks volumes. Teams who perform well have player buy-in, and that starts in the locker room and on the practice field.
Sounds like things are looking up for the Rams….at least for the next five minutes.
