Suspended New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton will attend Sunday night’s game against the San Diego Chargers.
As a condition of his year-long suspension, Payton is not allowed to have any contact with the Saints, but arrangements have been made for Payton to have a post-game visit with Drew Brees if he throws a touchdown during the game.
According to ESPN.com Brees is on tap to set the NFL record of throwing at least one touchdown in 48 consecutive games–breaking Johnny Unitas’ all-time NFL record of 47. ESPN.com states, “Brees asked the NFL to allow Payton, suspended general manager Mickey Loomis and suspended assistant Joe Vitt to attend the contest in order to see the star quarterback’s record-setting night.” Payton will attend but bitterness harbored against the NFL from Looms and Vitt made them decline the invitation.
This meeting with Payton may be the boost Brees needs. The Saints are 0-4 and Brees’ completion record is the lowest its been since 2003. You can’t ignore the fact that coaching may have alot do with the team’s performance–or lack thereof.
Knowing that Payton is there may also light a fire under the team and give them a much win. I think Brees will break the record, but more importantly, I think he’ll get some much needed words of encouragement from a coach that believed in him when no one else did.
