So, You Wanna Marry A Professional Athlete?

by Angela Davis/@jerseygirlsport/@ladyadavis The often dramatized and scandalous stories of professional athletes and their wives/girlfriends/others along with pseudo reality shows like Basketball Wives and Football Wives should have be huge wake-up call for any woman who has ever thought about marrying a professional athlete. The allure of wealth, celebrity and limelight has shown its dark side of infidelity, financial woes and just way too much drama. Now, it would be wrong to classify all the women married or in relationship to professional athletes as money-hungry opportunists, because that is certainly not the case. Besides, many of these men are no saints. So, let's take morality off the judgement table and look at it a different way. Taking the intangible elements like looks, personality, charm, etc. out of the equation, let’s consider marrying a professional athlete and look at it from a business perspective. Like any business professional you want to make a decision that’ll give you the greatest return on your investment. After reading an article from the All Psychology Schools website, I have gained greater perspective.  Here’s what the numbers show: The average salary by the top three professional leagues:

NBA: $4.75 Milliion

MLB: $3 Million

NFL: $1.9 Million

Again, this is the average which means more than likely you’ll end up with someone making significantly less than this. Here’s how the top three stack up in popularity with the media and fans:

Football players are the most popular but have the least amount of money, so they have the most pressure to perform and look the part with the lavish lifestyle. So what does all this mean? Don’t quit your day job...and watch the ESPN 30 for 30 documentary Broke. All the stories about NFL players who were broke, taking out pay-day loans and going into financial crisis should be a great wake-up call for any woman looking to marry into the “pros”. There are plenty of stories about athletes with multi-million dollar contracts who can no longer pay mortgage or child support. But let’s be fair. There are also plenty of athletes who learn to manage their money. They exit the league with a plan, and are able to provide for their families without sacrificing their lifestyle because of good money management.

So where does this leave you? Jersey Girls if you are still attracted to a professional athlete, or happen to meet one and end up in a mutually respectful relationship, by all means go for it—just don’t go in blind. There is a price to pay when marrying at this level, and if you are going to invest your time and your heart, make sure it will yield a high return---and that’s priceless.
