The NFL off-season is particularly challenging for athletes. For some reason, they tend to get into more trouble when they’re not held to the structured scheduled during the season. Denver Broncos safety T.J. Ward said his recent legal stint, which happens to be an arrest warrant for assault and disturbing the peace for an incident at a strip club, was blown out of proportion.
“It was basically a ticket or a summons, and it wasn’t supposed to be a warrant,” he said, according to the Denver Post. “There was miscommunication between the police department and myself, so that’s why they issued that. But that’s all being resolved.”
According to the report, Ward threw a glass bottle at a bartender at a strip club after he refused to discard the bottle of liquor he brought in the club. Outside food and drinks are prohibited, and when Ward ordered a non-alcoholic drink and poured his carried-in liquor into it, the bartender took the drink and poured it out. In a moment of anger, Ward threw the bottle at the bartender.
Broncos head coach John Fox said he’s spoken with Ward and feel confident they are moving in the right direction. Ward seems to have learned from this experience.
“You have to be aware of what you do in certain situations and times of the day,” he said. “I’ve learned from that, and I’m looking forward to moving on.”
I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again: strip clubs and pro-athletes just don’t mix.
