Celebration Bowl honors the legacy of black college football

by Angela Davis|@jerseygirlsport |@ladyadavis

When college football fans talk about college football, they usually speak of the big names with the big television reach. The reality is Black college football has a prestigious and celebrated legacy in college football worthy of respect. While it’s often placed separate from ‘mainstream’ college football, the truth is, were it not for this honored legacy, many of these ‘big schools’ would never be where they are.

On December 17th, the Celebration Bowl will kick-off the college bowl season and bring together the best of the best in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) and the Mideastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). Famed Grambling State University will try and retain their championship against North Carolina A&T University who is coming in undefeated this season. This match-up is especially interesting in that A&T’s head coach  Rod Broadway was a former coach at Grambling State University.

If you don’t know anything about black college football, there are three things that are definite: the competition will be fierce, the trash-talking will be constant and the bands will deliver like never before.

Grambling State University and North Carolina A&T will meet at the new Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta on December 17th at 12PM eastern.

I guarantee you it’s going to be a good time.

Bubba Watson celebrates win a the Masters with a meal–at the Waffle House

What better way to celebrate another win at the Masters and putting on the coveted green jacket, than with something a little “smothered and covered”?! Well, yes, we’re talking about the Waffle House and that’s what golfer Bubba Watson went to eat after his amazing win in Augusta. He posted this pic on Twitter:

Apparently Watson took to Waffle House after his win in 2012. According to USA Today Sports:

I love it! It’s nice to see Watson hanging out and having fun. He seems just like a regular dude.
Congratulations!

(VIDEO) The proper way to deal with fan hate: Smile and chant with them like Dwight Howard did

After Dwight Howard’s less than loving marriage and subsequent bitter divorce to the Los Angeles Lakers he knew his return playing for the Houston Rockets would  not be met with smiles. In fact the jeers and name calling were expected, so when Lakers fans started chanting “Howard sucks!” he chanted right with them seemingly unphased by the hate. He even had a smile on his face! Watch:

Howard seemed to have the right attitude by channeling all that hate because the Rockets went on to beat the Lakers 134-108.

I think he had that song “I’m the man” playing in his head.

Lamar Odom is ready to move on from his marriage and get married again—to his basketball career

(TMZ) ~It was only a matter of time before Khloe Kardashian filed for divorce from her husband, NBA player Lamar Odom. Odom’s shenanigans over the summer seemed to be the tip of the iceberg in their relationship, and while she feigned a strong supportive front, the truth was she had one foot out the door.

In response to her filing for divorce on Friday, it seems Odom has responded saying,

“I can’t be f**kin’ with Khloe.  She brings out the bad side of me.”

I guess his friends are a problem too because he said their negative support of his marriage by bringing women around caused him to cheat on Khloe which he bragged about in a music video. Really???

Lamar Odom seems to need professional help–not because he’s getting a divorce or because his relationship failed (which I believe was doomed from the start), but because he seems to respond to life in a very immature manner.

While directing his focus to his basketball career can be a positive distraction, I think he needs to take some time and focus on his life. Perhaps his next relationship should be with a therapist. For at least a few years.

What do you think?

(VIDEO) Deion Sanders Has One-On-One Conversation with Babyface About Dating Tracey Edmonds

I’m sure it’s uncomfortable when the ex gets a phone call from his ex-wife’s new beau saying that he wants to meet him. And, I’m sure it’s doubly uncomfortable when the new guy is waiting to hear the response. This isn’t the plot of a movie, this was the real-life exchange of Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds when Hall of Famer, Deion Sanders called to talk about now girlfriend and ex-wife of Babyface, Tracey Edmonds.

During a recent episode of  “Oprah’s Next Chapter,” Babyface opened up about his friendship with his ex-wife and his feelings on her new relationship with  Sanders.

“I knew that Deion, Mr. Prime Time, seems like a nice guy,” Babyface says. “But he became a classy guy when he called me and said he didn’t want to meet my children until he sat down and had lunch or breakfast with me, so he knew me before he met my children.”

Sanders, who stars in the upcoming OWN reality series “Deion’s Family Playbook,” recently sat down with Babyface to have a man-to-man conversation.

“Deion’s a good guy,” Babyface says. “Tracy’s a good girl. She’s the mother of my children and we have a great relationship and we live to make sure our children are happy.

Babyface continues and says, “I reached my hand out because Tracey’s family, so I want to make sure that she’s good. And I know she wants to make sure that I’m good.”

This is an amazing picture of what grown men do. I have the utmost respect for Sanders and Edmonds for handling this the way that they did.
