Giving Thanks

Tuesday, November 23rd, 2010

The holiday season is upon us and we all tend to get a bit nostalgic. We get to spend quality time with our family and our friends and for us Jersey Girls—it’s time for shopping! As always, this is the time of year when we stop and take a minute to appreciate the things that give our lives meaning and value. So, in honor of that tradition, we’ve created a short list of things we’re grateful for: Jersey Girl Sports style!

1.  Michael Vick: He undoubtedly has the comeback story of the year! After being tried and found guilty of being the most disliked athlete on the face of the earth, it seems the jury of public opinion has reversed its decision. Michael Vick returned to the game under a cloud of skepticism wrapped in his own humility. Despite those who refuse to forgive him, Michael Vick let his game do the talking—and through it he shouted, “I’m back!” His impressive November 15th show of athleticism and skill cleared up any doubt that Michael Vick is back—better than ever!

2.  The Hotties:  Whenever we’re having a bad day or need a quick pick-me-up the hotties always get it done.  A      daily peek at the www.jerseygirlsports.com/pics page is equivalent to about 3 cups of coffee! Whew!!!

3.  Monday Night Football (MNF): Mondays can be rough, but Monday Night Football makes it all better. This season has been especially great. Monday nights have spotlighted true talent and underscored those who should have stayed retired–(hint, hint).  Enjoying a great MNF game while drinking the Designated Drink of the week is just a bit of heaven!

 4.  The T.Ocho Show: We’re mostly thankful that T.O. has an outlet to speak—as much as he wants. Terrell Owens is a great athlete and his talents cannot be denied. However, his strong need for attention makes this show the perfect outlet for him to say all the things he shouldn’t say in the post game press conferences. The fact that his name is on the show will hopefully feed his ego enough that he’ll be satisfied with the medium. This will no doubt curb anymore crying spells, and for this we are thankful.

 5.  Who Dat?! After the New Orleans Saints won the Super Bowl last season, the “Who Dat” nation was on fire. For Jersey Girl Sports it only raised the question of, Who IS ‘Dat’? Well, we went on a mission to the ‘Big Easy’ to get the answer and not only did we get it, we met a lot of great, interesting and entertaining Saints fans along the way. The fact we were able to do it in a 2011 Toyota Camry made it all the better.

6.   Sports jersey’s for women: FINALLY we can represent our favorite teams in sexy, sporty jerseys, tees and apparel that fit our personality and style. We no longer have to restyle and reconfig our boyfriend or husband’s or brother’s jersey to make it ”female friendly”.  Victoria’s Secret, JC Penny, the NFL and Touch by Alyssa Milano all have apparel for the female sports fan: a jersey girl!

7.  JGFs: Jersey Girl Sports is possible because of the wonderful, fantastic, powerful, dynamic, intelligent, and beautiful Jersey Girlfriends we have.  Thank You!

Of course there are many more things we’re thankful for, but we must remember, the most important things in life aren’t things.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Your JGFs,

Social Media Rules Athletes Need To Know

Thursday, November 18th, 2010

Athletes today are more like celebrities. Gone are the days when they just stayed on the field, court, track, etc., played the game and then went home. Back then, our only connection or inside look into their lives was a feature piece in a magazine or a Barbara Walters special. Now we have social media, and not only do we know what they’re doing at all times, but we know what they think, how they feel and what they’ll do next–and that’s not always a good thing.

Social media has definitely changed the landscape of the world. It has allowed millions of people to be connected faster and easier. It has changed the way businesses connect to consumers, the way media circulates information and it has made celebrities, once untouchable, now just a click away. Unfortunately, many don’t know how to manage it.

There’s an old saying that “there’s no such thing as bad publicity”. I’d challenge that line of thinking, so much so, that I’ve created a short list of social media rules athletes need to know:

1. Less Is More: We, the fans, don’t have to know EVERYTHING all the time. A little mystery can go a long way. Being out in the social media realm all the time creates over exposure. After a while, we’ll get a little tired of you, especially when you’re not winning any games.

2. If You Don’t Have Anything Good To Say, Shut Up! This is an old rule your mother should have taught you. Commenting about other athletes’ game, or lack thereof, their situation or issue in a negative way can sometimes come back and haunt you. Remember, one finger pointed at someone means there are four pointed back at you! We, the fans, don’t really like this–especially if you’re not winning any games.

3. Put On Your Big-Boy Pants: When you’re out in “social media land” you have to know that not everyone will like you. In fact, you’ll get and see more criticisms, judgements and crazy commentary than you can ever imagine. You need tough skin and the ability to let some things roll off your back when you participate in social media. While you have more access to mainstream media, when it comes to social media, the fans rule!

4. Think Before You Tweet: Here’s another golden rule: Read and re-read your tweet before you hit ’send’. Nothing is harder than trying to recant a statement. Once it’s out, it’s out there…forever! Unfortunately, with Twitter, you can make stupid statements in 140 words or less, just ask T.O. This week he tried to backtrack his tweet and clean it up, but it was too late. Didn’t Kita and Mo tell him about this rule?

5. Social Media Can Be Good For You: More than anything, social media can help your image. You can respond, chat and/or talk directly to fans, promote a charitable cause you support and even head off rumors and bad reports. Look at Tiger Woods. After all his criticism about the media, he’s back on Twitter this week, trying to rebuild his image and reputation. Social Media is powerful!

For athletes, the message is clear: be smart about social media AND make sure you’re spending more time winning games than tweeting!

Top 20 Things Every Woman Should Know Going Into This NFL Season

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

Every year, there is a group of women, young and old, of all ethnicities and economic backgrounds that are sitting at home waiting
 anxiously
not for the Barney’s Annual Sale or for her husband to finally take out the trash without being asked to, but for those six favorite words

Are You Ready For Some Football?

That’s right, as hard as it is for some to believe (these “some” are mostly men
wanted to make sure I pointed that out) women are in love with the game of football.  With over 45 million women watching NFL games each week, the NFL is the favorite among women. Now with anything there are those that are addicted when it comes to the sport of football. Let’s take me for example, I believe I am a man’s dream, I wake-up to the NFL Network, I go to bed to it, but most importantly I also know what I’m talking about, and I talk major shit about my favorite team or player. Then there are those of you who watch the games in passing. You know a couple of terms, you’re up on the basic knowledge, and you do know how to sit down and enjoy a good game. Then there are those of you have no idea what the hell is going on. You think that the’ man in motion’ is a term coined from the hit show Cops, referring to a criminal on the run, but you do take a small interest in the game for some reason or another.  (more…)

Terrell Owens: Ocho Uno is Coming to Cincinnati

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

Yesterday, after much speculation Terrell Ownes signed with his third team in three years, the Cincinnati Bengals. The Bengals and receiver Terrell Owens agreed to a two-year, $2 million deal, which also includes another $2 million in incentives that are attached to stat requirements that T.O. has been able to produce in past years.

Wow
two big names on one team, doesn’t this sound familiar, very Lebron-Bosh-Wade, but without all of the media hype. The big question is who’s going to get the ball, how’s this going to work, will T.O. wear #81, will this actually lead to a Super Bowl? All great questions, and according to Bengals coach Marvin Lewis, ‘it’s going to take some getting used to’. (more…)

Stand Up and Show Them Who You Really Are

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

Each week, I spend a couple of hours researching and mapping out what I want to write about in my weekly blog; who did what, who showed out, who showed up, who’s getting in trouble for the past week’s shenanigans, so on and so forth.  So this week, I started off with the notion to write about how it has become the norm for athletes who get in trouble to think that after they have broken the law, they are the “victim” because of their “star power”.  Now this was prompted after a friend wrote on his FB page that a former NFL QB’s name was slandered after his admitted drug addiction got him kicked off the team and eventually out of the NFL.  (D, you got to be freakin’ kidding me if you think this man’s name was slandered by his former team, after they released him because he had a drug problem
PLEASE).  Then after the recent week of hearing about how many professional athletes are using their powers for good, I realized that I can’t lump all athletes in the category of “ungrateful”.

For the last week, we’ve heard stories of sympathy and compassion for the devastation that rocked Haiti.  Each day the stories of survival and loss become more and more entrenched in our minds and hearts.  There are countless organizations doing their part to aid in this devastation, but one in particular that I applaud is “Athletes Relief Fund for Haiti” setup by retired NBA All-Star Alonzo Mourning and Miami Heat’s Dwayne Wade.
