Serena Williams is sick! She’s forced out of doubles match due to ‘viral’ illness

First Serena Williams loses in third round at Wimbledon and now she is out of the doubles match! A reported “viral” illness has forced Serena Williams out of the double’s match.

According to the Associated Press:

The start of Tuesday’s doubles match was delayed about 10 minutes while Serena was examined by medical staff and her blood pressure was checked.

No. 1 Serena, who lost in the third round on Saturday to Alize Cornet of France, looked unsteady in the warm-up for a first-round match against Kristina Barrois and Stefanie Voegle on Court 1.

A doctor was called on court, and Serena appeared to be in tears. She buried her hands in her face for several minutes before taking the court to play.

With Serena serving in the third game, she looked faint and could sometimes barely grip the ball.

All four of her serves were double faults. None registered on the radar gun.

After a visit from the umpire, Kader Nouni, and consulting with her sister, the eighth-seeded Williams sisters retired trailing 3-0.

Awww man! This is horrible. With Serena out, Venus out and Caroline Wozniaki out, who in the U.S. will be watching tennis? Hmmmm….

I’ll wait….

Oh well, I hope Serena gets well and is ready for the U.S. Open.

No more Americans at Wimbledon; Sloane Stephens is out

Sloane Stephens was the last remaining hope that an American would win Wimbledon, and well, that hope is gone. Stephens lost to Marion Bartoli 6-4, 7-5 in the second set when she lost her serve.

At this point there are no Americans, male or female competing for the coveted Wimbledon title. So, who will watch? Maybe, some Americans will circle back at the final match-ups, but until then, we may be redirecting our focus to baseball and all this NBA news.

Say it ain’t so! Serena is OUT of Wimbledon

Well, she made it past the dreaded 3rd round, but that didn’t last very long. Serena Williams is OUT of Wimbledon getting defeated by Sabine Lisicki  6-2, 1-6, 6-4.

Serena Williams loses

Serena Williams loses

Lisicki end Williams’ 34 consecutive-game winning streak and knocked the top ranked player in the world out of contention for the coveted title. Next stop–the U.S. Open.

With Nadal, Federer, Sharapova and now Williams out of contention, the question is , who will be watching Wimbledon?

This will be interesting.

Jersey Girl Sports summer guide for the sports fan

After the NBA finals and Stanley Cup games, sports seems to slip into obscurity. The excitement and intensity that sports brings seem to fall into a lull leaving many sports fans wondering, “what’s next?”.  Even though the NFL season still a bit too far away, sports fans do have some options. Here’s our list of the top 10 sports and sporting events to consider:

1. Wimbledon – It’s the best of the best in tennis. In fact, as I write this blog, Wimbledon is in full effect, and this year’s games have proven to be especially shocking.

2.  NBA Draft – It’s always good to see young hopefuls embrace their dreams of playing professional basketball. Though it doesn’t always have the thrill of the NFL draft, the NBA has it’s own brand of entertainment and excitement worth watching.

3.  WNBA – With Brittney Griner and Stylar Diggins now joining the illustrious group of professional female ballers, this season is definitely worth watching!

4. NASCAR – The race car season is far from over, and if fast cars are your thing, NASCAR has plenty of races through the season to keep you revved up.

5. MLB All-Star Game – This is where baseball’s best come out to play. Whether you like the Home Run Derby or the game itself, the All Star game has something for all baseball fans.

6. PGA – There’s a myriad of games under the PGA Tour that would appease any golf lover. Check in to watch your favorites.

7. The ESPYS – It’s the ‘Academy Awards for sports and this year it’s especially good because beloved TV personality Robin Roberts will receive the Arthur Ashe Courage Award.

8.  NFL Pre-season –  Pre-season NFL games start in August and it’s what kicks off the excitement for the NFL season. That also means it’s time to get your fantasy teams together.

9. Soccer – Soccer is especially great this year because it’s the FIFA qualifiers so all eyes are on the field in anticipation for the largest viewed sporting event on the globe.

10. US Open – This tennis match signifies the end of the tennis season and the intro to the NFL season. Taking place over Labor Day weekend, it’s another meet-up of the best tennis has to offer.

When you look at it like this, there’s enough sports to keep the summer interesting.

After that, we’ll be ready for some football!

Another upset at Wimbledon – Roger Federer out

First Sharapova was ousted in the second round and then it was as Roger Federer!  Federer was upset in the second round by 116th ranked Sergiy Stakhovsky.  In what was a strange day in London, the seven-time Wimbledon champion was eliminated. Federer couldn’t hide his disappointment:

“It’s always a disappointment losing any match around the world, and particularly here,” Federer said. “I’ve had some great moments here, but also some tougher ones. Can’t have ’em all. It was a tough loss today.”

In what was a very strange and shocking day Federer was just the icing on the cake when Maria Sharapova was upset by 113th seeded Michelle Larcher de Brito. What a great day for the lower-ranked players. Stakhovsky was ecstatic:

“I’m still in disbelief,” Stakhovsky said. “When you play Roger Federer at Wimbledon it’s like you are playing two persons. First you play Roger Federer, then you play his ego, and on the Centre Court of Wimbledon, where he is historical. So that’s like playing two against one.”

We’re all shocked.  With Nadal, Sharapova and now Federer out, we’re all locked in to see what will happen to Serena!

I don’t know what’s going on in Wimbledon. I think there’s something in the water.
