During a press conference to discuss his new contract, Houston Texan’s running back Arian Foster struggled holding back the tears as he described what his mother went through in order to raise him. The San Diego California native signed a contract extension worth $43.5 million dollars, $20 million guaranteed. When asked by a reporter what was the lowest time in his life and how did you pull yourself out, Foster quickly became overwhelmed with emotion. Foster began to answer the question but his voice began to crack and he had to remove his glasses, overcome by his mother’s story.
“We’ve gone through a lot of hardships as a family but the straw that broke the camel’s back is when I saw my mother pawn her wedding ring to give us something to eat that night.”
Foster tried to compose himself as someone passed him a tissue to wipe away the tears streaming from his face, then he continued.
“I told myself I wanted to do something with my life,” a teary eyed Foster said, and he did.
The University of Tennessee standout finished his college career second on Tennessee’s all-time rushing list with 2,964 yards. Signed by the Houston Texans in 2009, the undrafted free agent has rushed for over 3,000 yards and 29 touchdowns in his 3 year career. With numbers like those it’s no wonder the Texans would like to keep him long term.
With a new contract and the support of his friends and family, Foster made sure to deliver a promise he made to his mother. When Foster’s mother asked her son what would he get her, the NFL’s leading rusher jokingly told her he would buy her a fruit basket.
Just minutes after signing his new contract Foster fulfilled his promise and had a fruit basket sent to his mother.
