The recent issue with 49ers offensive linebacker Aldon Smith being arrested at the Los Angeles International airport for making a bomb threat seems to be the straw the broke the camel’s back.

According to ESPN NFL-insider Adam Schefter, the 49ers will not be renewing his fifth-year option:

49ers are not expected to pick up the fifth-year option on LB Aldon Smith’s contract, per league source.

This is really no surprise. His latest arrest and then the felony charges stemming from a party in 2012 just don’t look good. Also, he’s probably already going to get fined and possibly suspended by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

This might be a good thing. If getting paid millions of dollars to play a sport can’t keep you sober and crime-free, then nothing will. Parting ways with the team may be the wake-up call he needs.
