We just weren’t sure how the “Honey Badger” AKA, Tyrann Mathieu would fair in the draft. Truth be told, we weren’t sure if he’d have an NFL career at all. Alas, he was drafted and picked up by the Arizona Cardinals. Apparently, he got a good deal:

According to USA Today Sports:

Mathieu’s agent, Patrick Lawlor, said his client signed a four-year contract worth over $3 million, which is more than $100,000 higher than last year’s No. 69 pick (Buffalo Bills wide receiver T.J. Graham) received.

I guess this is good. Given Mathieu’s past with drug use and his fall from grace in college football at LSU, it is good that a team would take a chance on him. He is, after all,  still talented.

While the Cardinals are merciful, they aren’t stupid. The $662, 500 guaranteed signing bonus due Mathieu has been split up between $265,000 up front and the remaining $397,500 to be given during the rest of his three-year contract. That’s smart business. This will protect the Cardinals in case Mathieu gets comfortable and decides to re-engage in drug use.

More and more the NFL  teams will protect themselves (financially) from the antics of their players. Rookies would do well to come in with a clean slate because it protects them as well.

At the end of the day, sports is a business.
