USA-Portugal Soccer Match Sets Television Record for Most Watched In History
If you didn’t see Sunday’s soccer match between the United States and Portugal, you are one of the few.
ESPN announced Monday that its telecast of the game averaged 18,220,000 viewers. The previous high for a soccer game came in 1999, when 17.975 million viewers watched the U.S. women win the 1999 World Cup final in a game played at the Rose Bowl.
Almost 23 million watched during the last couple of minutes. CRAZY!!!!!
The network also set a record for any men’s soccer game with a 9.6 rating. But who runs the world…girls! The women’s final in 1999 still holds the mark with an 11.4.
Now only a couple days prior when the USA took on Ghana, only 11 million viewers tuned in.
As a comparison, the average late-afternoon Sunday football game on Fox averaged 27.2 million viewers in 2013.
Let’s see if we can brake another record when USA plays Germany on Thursday at noon.
